This networking ‘ask’ is all you’ll ever need
** Seeking an informational meeting with someone at a particular company?
** Want to move from supply chain to marketing, or finance to sales?
** Looking for a professional mentor?
This is all you need:
“[Name], I find your industry / background intriguing. I know you’re busy, but when you have a moment, may we schedule a time to chat? I’d simply like to pick your brain and hear your story about [insert specific and meaningful item here]?”
Each of these words has been strategically chosen and applied. They resonate and they work. I can’t begin to tell you how many pivotal, fruitful, genuine and life-changing relationships and occurrences I’ve personally generated this way. Furthermore, when people have approached me and said something equivalent, I’ve been happy to oblige. Why?
-
The phrasing is very genuine, and includes purpose and reasoning. Your intention is clear, and that creates trust and eliminates confusion.
-
You’re acknowledging and respecting their time, which shows solid business acumen and people skills.
-
The words “pick your brain” and “hear your story” subtly yet effectively do a couple things. First, they convey modesty and humbleness, and tell the person that you’re aware that don’t know everything, and that want to learn. (That creates more trust, even admiration). Second, the words have a casual nature about them, increasing the likelihood of a response. Lastly, people love telling stories, especially about themselves. Storytelling is in our nature as humans.
All you want here is a ‘yes,’ and usually it’s something like: “You know . . . sure, we could probably find a time next week or the following week.” Congratulations – you’re on your way to valuable knowledge and potential new adventures.
And remember: Be appreciative, and give back. We treasure our time, and the transfer of knowledge is extremely powerful. Appreciate your business relationships and try to somehow give back. You can do this directly through your own business efforts, or by connecting your new business contact with someone else, or by simply sharing your recommendations for the best BBQ in New Orleans after you learned about your new acquaintance’s upcoming vacation there.
