A mid-sized retail/CPG corporation was expanding their corporate marketing team to further reduce outsourcing and grow their e-commerce business. They needed a Digital Manager on an upward career trajectory to spearhead the smaller digital group, and in particular, one who could bridge team leadership and strategy with rolling up their sleeves and still being tactical. Just as importantly: they had to do it with a smile on their face, day-in and day-out.

The particular challenges were:

  • Lack of candidates who were proven team leaders, yet who possessed the tactical & technical skillsets of a front-end developer/designer (e.g. hand-coding HTML/HTLM5/CSS, Javascript, Photoshop, custom email production, etc.);
  • The tactical professionals lacked the team leadership experience . . . AND/OR the team managers who possessed the tactical and technical skills weren’t interested in being so tactical anymore (they wanted to manage and develop strategy, not execute);
  • The candidate market for ‘technical digital generalists’ of this nature was very competitive. They are treated and paid exceptionally well.

Additional position requirements and/or circumstances:

  • Client sought strong knowledge of traditional digital marketing + more progressive knowledge (e.g. inbound, CRO, automation), and they had to implement at the pace that fit the company;
  • Client preferred local candidates and not to relocate for the position.

Result:

4SIGHT made nearly 300 calls to reach digital marketers in the immediate area. (This geography is robust in digital talent, but so much that the talent tends to be formally segmented into generalists and/or technical/development, not a mix of both). We leveraged our strong candidate network, but had to branch out and utilize heavy referral networking and cold-calling to drive candidate flow.

Our final hire was a strong manager we sourced who started their career as a full-stack developer and progressed into team leadership, which they enjoy. The technical fit as well as the person’s fit into the company culture were aligned. Our new hire was attracted to a different side of the marketing industry that this opportunity provided, as well as the chance to really shape a growing business and make a footprint.
